چکیده

Abstract The heterogeneity of resource availability shapes animal movements at different spatio-temporal scales. Given that various scales are assumed to be linked, the space use temperate ungulates within seasonal ranges (winter, summer) should related their movement patterns annual scale. In this study, we aimed evaluate level stationarity moose ( Alces alces ) and link within-season use. We analysed ranging behaviour 32 fitted with GPS collars from two study areas in Eastern Poland, where scale a fraction individuals migrate between summer winter (partial migration). Our results revealed home expressed remarkable variation. probability was significantly higher (by 23%), mean range size tended lower (9.7 km 2 among seasonally migrated than non-migratory (14.3 ). addition, found (i) summer, were more stationary 19%) exhibited smaller (9.0 15.9 , respectively) (ii) males (19.6 remarkably greater females (9.6 significant movements, any environmental change (e.g. climate warming) affecting an animal’s strategy could alter presumably individual fitness. Significance statement To maximize fitness, animals adjust deal variations distribution landscape. variation causes types migratory behaviours, year-round migration, when establish spatially separated ranges. Studies on suggest stability can linked behaviour. Using locations GPS-tracked moose, demonstrate prone establishing stable (especially occupied same area throughout year. Moreover, winter, which may season-specific spatial renewability forage. show clear temporal movements.

Warm-season heat stress in moose (Alces alces)

Understanding howmoose (Alces alces (L., 1758)) are affected by temperature is critical for determiningwhy populations have recently declined at the southern extent of their North American range.Warm-season heat-stress thresholds of 14 and 20 °C are commonly used to study moose, but the variable response of free-ranging moose to temperatures above these thresholds suggests thatmoosemay bemore t...

Road and rail side vegetation management implications of habitat use by moose relative to brush cutting season.

Plants cut at different times produce resprouts that vary in their nutritional value relative to when they are cut. To determine how vegetation management in transportation (road and rail) corridors at different times of the year could influence browse quality in the years following cutting, and how this could potentially influence encounters between herbivores and vehicles, we undertook a 3-ye...

Clark’s Nutcracker Breeding Season Space Use and Foraging Behavior

Considering the entire life history of a species is fundamental to developing effective conservation strategies. Decreasing populations of five-needle white pines may be leading to the decline of Clark's nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana). These birds are important seed dispersers for at least ten conifer species in the western U.S., including whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis), an obligate mutu...

--The hunting behavior of and space use by radio-tagged Eastern Screech-Owls (Otus asio; three pairs, one unmated male, and four fledglings) were observed in central Kentucky from MarchJune 1999. Screech-owls perched at a mean height of 2.2 m. The mean giving up time was 340.2 sec, while the mean time until initiating an attack was 361.4 sec. Owls attacked prey located a mean distance of 2.27 m...
